Outlander’s Jamie Fraser holds the title of King of Men for good reason.  It seems that everything he says to Claire during private moments is always spot on.  The simple things like “You are my home now”, or “You will always have my soul” just make you want to go “Ohhhh that’s so sweet!”   The man can even make a comment to Claire about her hair turning grey and it makes our hearts melt.  If any normal husband were to make a comment about grey hairs would probably get slapped or the cold shoulder treatment.  But one comparison to moonlight and Jamie’s got the entire hair commentary singing a different tune.   Jamie always says the right things at the right times.  Even if he is trying to lighten the mood a wee bit and yet telling Claire he will not leave her, all in the same breath (“Yes, I believe you, but it would have been easier if you’d only been a witch.”).

And when a simple I love you isn’t enough, Jamie comes up with “Your face is my heart Sassenach, and the love of you is my soul”.  And all the James Fraser lessons on lovemaking quotes like “A man should pay tribute to your body,” he said softly… “For you are beautiful, and that is your right.”   And book fans will know possibly the most romantic line ever, “When the day shall come that we do part,” he said softly, and turned to look at me, “if my last words are not ‘I love you’-ye’ll ken it was because I didna have time.”    …. See?  Melting hearts……

And don’t even get me started on gift giving.  First of all, Jamie remembers their wedding anniversary, not Claire.  She’s clueless.  But Jamie has taken the time to spot THE perfect gift for his wife.  Sure, sure he could have just picked up some bauble while the jewelers shop, but he spies something he knows his wife will be thrilled with:  a real honest to goodness, wooden physicians case, decked out with all the little vials of simples, wee knives, and even a state of the art microscope.  Well, state of the art for the 18th century anyway.   (In the books, the box is engraved which is something that comes into play in future books, and comes with the casebook of the previous owner.  This is something that is extremely helpful to Claire as it assists her in applying 20th century medicine with some 18th century cures.)  Claire of course IS ecstatic about the case because it means that Jamie really gets her.  He knows that healing people is something that she simply can’t stop doing, and he fully accepts it.  Plus it has saved him enough times, so why wouldn’t he want his personal physician to not have the very best.

In episode 401, Jamie makes a comment that perhaps one day he will be able to buy her beautiful gowns and jewels.  Claire tells him that the simple wedding band he gave to her is all she needs.  That ring saw her through 20 miserable years with Frank.  That ring represented to Claire Jamie’s strength and love through the centuries between them.  And now, of course it is gone.  All because Stephen Bonnet is a horrible, rotten, despicable, scum of the earth excuse of a human being who deserves a fate worse than death.    OH!  Spoiler…….sorry.

But the King of Men has nearly too many good qualities to mention.  He is a defender of women, children and friends, a smooth talker, charmer, good to look at in (or out….) of a kilt great taste for wine, can make his own liquor, can build a house, tend a farm, train horses, sword fight, skilled lover, hunt, prepare the game he has killed for kitchen purposes, knit, swim, can fix a water wheel, speaks several languages including French, Chinese, Latin, German, and several Native American dialects, inspire loyalty among his men and much more.  About the only thing he can’t do is sing.  And I’m perfectly willing to ignore that flaw.

All hail James Alexander Malcom McKenzie Fraser: the King of Men.
