Fear not friends. Droughtlander is almost over. Soon Jamie, Clair, Bree, Roger, Fergus and Marsali will return from their dreadfully long break to bring us the fifth season of Outlander. And we can hardly wait!
Season 5 is based on Diana Gabaldon’s fifth book in the series: The Fiery Cross. It is an epic tale containing two of the longest days EVER. But trust me: it is well worth the read.
Roger has just returned from his confinement among the Mohawk. He is trying to adjust to fatherhood, and see where a historian fits in among life in the wilds of North Carolina on a homestead built in the vast wilderness of Fraser’s Ridge. So he is willing to do anything needed around the Ridge and for his father-in-law, to prove he is worthy of Bree’s love.
Brianna is adjusting to motherhood and still dealing with the trauma experienced in season 4. She is still unsure if Roger is ready to accept that wee Jemmie may not be his. Because of Frank’s camping trips when she was a child, Bree is phenomenally better prepared for life in the 18th century, more so than Roger. It’s almost like Frank was training her to make this journey….. oh wait….. was he??? He knew Claire would return to Jamie, he found the obituary telling of the fire. Did he find Bree back there too?
Jamie waivers between his role as Himself at the Ridge, militia man for Governor Tryon, and overprotective father. Jamie and Roger toggle a bit. Roger is still very pissed for what Jamie did. I mean…. Getting beaten to a pulp, then sold to a tribe of natives isn’t something you can shake off easily regardless of the misunderstanding. (And yet, NO ONE blames Lizzie who started this whole mess.) On the other hand, to Jamie, a man of family honor above all else, Roger’s leaving Bree alone in the big city of Wilmington was unthinkable. Can Jamie EVER forgive Roger to leaving Bree alone, which allowed her to be in the wrong place at the wrong time alone with Stephen Bonnet. Roger has a lot to prove before Jamie sees him as a son of house Fraser.
And Claire, poor Claire. She knows Roger is a good man, but also understands Jamie like no one else. She sees how difficult it is for Bree to let a man touch her after what she’s gone through but not quite sure how to fix things. In the book, this is where the maggots come into play, but we will need to wait and see if this bit makes it to the show.
Fergus, Marsali, Murtugh and Aunt Jocasta all fit into the puzzle as well. In the book, Fergus and Marsali move to the Ridge and live a short distance away from the Big House. Marsali manages the whiskey production and Fergus…. Well Fergus …..he has his own struggles to face on the Ridge. Of course the show storyline for Murtagh is brand new, considering that in the books Murtagh died at Culloden. And Aunt Jocasta continues to show her McKenzie colors by ever working behind the scenes to twist the threads of fate.
And then there is Adso. Move over Rollo there’s a new pet on the Ridge! Who would think that a stray feral kitten and some poison ivy could make up the most romantic gift ever on Fraser’s Ridge!
Starz released some of the episode titles for this season. The midseason episode “Ballad of Roger Mac” could be a very gut wrenching, tearjerker. Make sure you have your box of tissues on hand for that one.
I for one am so excited to be in the final week of Droughtlander. You can gear up by watching the Outlander marathon on Starz starting February 14th with episodes from season 1 and straight through to the S5E1 premier at 9pm EST on Sunday, February 16th! Je Suis Prest!
